Anatomy Exam 4 Cram Sheet

Appendicular Skeleton, Axial Skeleton, and full muscle-by-muscle Origin/Insertion/Action/Innervation reference for the Appendicular and Axial Musculature.

How to use this: this is a condensed, night-before-the-exam reference, not a replacement for the full study guide — it assumes you've already learned the material and just need the highest-yield facts at a glance. If a term feels unfamiliar, go back to the full guide for the explanation.

Appendicular Skeleton

TermWhat you need to know
Pectoral girdleOnly 2 bones: clavicle (S-shaped; medial/sternal end → manubrium, lateral/acromial end → scapula's acromion; conoid tubercle near acromial end, costal tuberosity near sternal end) + scapula. Trades stability for mobility.
Scapula landmarksScapular spine divides supraspinous fossa (above) from infraspinous fossa (below) and continues laterally into the acromion (AC joint). Coracoid process hooks forward anteriorly; glenoid cavity (lateral) articulates with the humeral head.
HumerusHead → glenoid cavity; greater/lesser tubercles flank head (rotator-cuff attachment); deltoid tuberosity on shaft. Distally: capitulum (articulates with radius) + trochlea (articulates with ulna); coronoid & olecranon fossae accommodate the ulna in flexion/extension.
Radius & ulnaUlna is medial, forms most of elbow via trochlear notch (olecranon posterior + coronoid process anterior). Radius is lateral; radial head rotates against capitulum/radial notch; radial tuberosity = biceps brachii insertion; distal radius carries the ulnar notch. Interosseous membrane binds the two shafts.
Hand bones8 carpals (proximal row: scaphoid, lunate, triquetrum, pisiform; distal row: trapezium, trapezoid, capitate, hamate) → 5 metacarpals (1=thumb through 5=pinky) → phalanges: 3 per finger (digits 2–5), only 2 for the thumb (no middle phalanx).
Pelvic girdle2 coxal bones, each fusing ilium (superior wing) + ischium (posteroinferior, sit bone) + pubis (anteroinferior, pubic symphysis) at the acetabulum (receives femoral head). Landmarks: AIIS, lesser sciatic notch, obturator foramen, arcuate line, auricular surface (sacroiliac joint). Female pelvis is wider/shallower with larger outlet (childbirth adaptation).
Femur & patellaFemur = longest/strongest bone; head → acetabulum via the femoral neck; greater/lesser trochanters (muscle attachment) joined anteriorly by the intertrochanteric line; distal medial/lateral condyles form the knee joint with the tibia. Patella = sesamoid bone within the quadriceps tendon, apex points inferiorly toward the tibial tuberosity.
Tibia, fibula & footTibia is medial, weight-bearing, with tibial tuberosity (patellar ligament) and medial malleolus. Fibula is lateral, non-weight-bearing, forms the lateral malleolus; interosseous membrane connects the two shafts. Foot mirrors the hand: 7 tarsals (including calcaneus, the heel bone), 5 metatarsals, phalanges 2 (great toe) / 3 (other toes).

Axial Skeleton

TermWhat you need to know
Bone tissue typesCompact bone = dense outer shell, bears most mechanical load; spongy/trabecular bone = interior lattice, concentrated near long-bone ends. Medullary cavity = central marrow space. Periosteum wraps the external surface (blood supply, tendon/ligament attachment). Osteon = compact bone's unit: concentric lamellae around a central canal, linked by perforating canals; interstitial lamellae fill gaps between osteons.
Bone classes & growth4 shapes: long (humerus), short (wrist/ankle only), flat (cranium), sesamoid (patella). Growth: primary ossification center in diaphysis (fetal) → secondary centers in epiphyses (postnatal) → epiphyseal plate (hyaline cartilage; zones: resting, proliferative, hypertrophic, calcification) drives longitudinal growth until it ossifies and fuses the epiphysis to the diaphysis.
Skull overview29 named bones: 14 facial + 8 cranial + 7 associated (hyoid, ossicles) → 80 axial + 126 appendicular = 206 total adult bones. Sutures: sagittal (between parietals), coronal (frontal–parietals), lambdoid (occipital–parietals). 3 cranial fossae: anterior (frontal lobes), middle (sella turcica/sphenoid), posterior (cerebellum, foramen magnum).
Key cranial bonesOccipital: foramen magnum + occipital condyles (articulate with atlas/C1). Frontal: supra-orbital foramen. Temporal: houses middle/inner ear, stylomastoid foramen (CN VII exit). Sphenoid: sella turcica (houses pituitary), foramen ovale/spinosum (CN V branches). Ethmoid: crista galli (falx cerebri anchor), cribriform plate (CN I fibers).
Cranial foraminaForamen magnum → spinal cord, vertebral arteries, CN XI. Optic canal → CN II. Superior orbital fissure → CN III, IV, V1, VI. Foramen rotundum → V2. Foramen ovale → V3. Foramen spinosum → middle meningeal artery. Stylomastoid foramen → CN VII. Jugular foramen (temporal + occipital) → CN IX, X, XI + internal jugular vein.
Facial bones & mandibleMaxillae = upper jaw + maxillary sinuses (1 of 4 paranasal sinuses, with frontal/sphenoidal/ethmoid). Vomer + ethmoid's perpendicular plate = bony nasal septum. Mandible = only mobile skull bone; condylar process → TMJ; coronoid process = muscle attachment; mental foramen = nerve exit. Hyoid is suspended by ligaments only (no bony articulation), anchors tongue/larynx muscles. Fontanelles (e.g. anterior) = unossified gaps allowing birth compression and brain growth.
Vertebral column overview26 bones: 7 cervical + 12 thoracic + 5 lumbar + sacrum (5 fused) + coccyx (3–5 fused). 4 alternating curves: thoracic & sacral = primary (prenatal); cervical & lumbar = secondary (postnatal). Typical vertebra: body + vertebral arch (pedicles/laminae) enclosing the vertebral foramen; spinous + transverse processes; superior/inferior articular processes.
Regional vertebrae & thoraxCervical (C1–C7): transverse foramen + bifid spinous process (except C7). C1/atlas: no body, articulates with occipital condyles ('yes'). C2/axis: dens pivots inside atlas ('no'). C7: long palpable spinous process. Thoracic (T1–T12): costal facets for ribs. Lumbar (L1–L5): largest, thickest bodies. Ribs: true 1–7 (direct to sternum), false 8–10 (indirect, vertebrochondral) & 11–12 (floating). Sternum: manubrium + body + xiphoid process.

MUSCLES OF THE PERINEUM — UROGENITAL TRIANGLE, SUPERFICIAL
Bulbospongiosus (male)Compresses base, stiffens penis, ejects urine or semenPerineal body (central tendon of perineum) and median rapheCorpus spongiosum, perineal membrane, and corpus cavernosumPudendal nerve, perineal branch (S2-S4)
Bulbospongiosus (female)Compresses and stiffens clitoris, narrows vaginal openingPerineal body (central tendon of perineum)Bulb of vestibule, perineal membrane, body of clitoris, corpus cavernosumPudendal nerve, perineal branch (S2-S4)
IschiocavernosusCompresses and stiffens penis or clitoris, helping maintain erectionRamus and tuberosity of the ischiumCorpus cavernosum of penis or clitoris (also ischiopubic ramus in females)Pudendal nerve, perineal branch (S2-S4)
